Protecting Ourselves and Those We Love: A special post by Extra Second V.P. J.M. Kline

“A conqueror is one who wins by fighting; a ‘more than conqueror’ is one who wins without fighting.”     -Unknown

One doesn’t have to look far, whether it’s the news, social media, or even in your own city - crime and violence have been accelerating at an alarming pace. Violence can take on many shapes and forms, impacting children, the elderly and everyone in between. I read a statistic recently from the Department of Justice: You have a greater than 50% chance of experiencing a violent attack at some point in your life.

It’s been said that one of our highest priorities is to protect ourselves and those we are responsible for.

So how do we go about that?

What does it look like?

Do we join a martial arts or self-defense class?

Do we buy a weapon?

Do we hire a personal security detail?

Do we simply pray for God’s protection and hope for the best?

The founder of the S.A.F.E. Training system, Yousef Badou, states, “It’s no longer good enough to stop our planning or training at our reaction to violence.” We need to get ahead of the bad event, with principle-based skills, to spot violence before it happens. It’s about training with a proactive mindset, and seeking to prevent the bad event - or if we can’t, minimize the damage.

One of the foundational principles that we teach is science-based situational awareness. What is situational awareness? Used by the military and law enforcement, it’s a foundational principle in the personal defense and protection training world.

We could crack open many definitions. Simply stated, let’s call it paying attention, knowing what to pay attention to, and committing that attention to our subconscious. Being aware. It is also the equivalent of always seeing a few seconds or minutes into the future.

We teach you what to look for before the bad thing happens, giving you clues that can help in knowing what a person or a crowd is going to do before they actually do it, thus removing yourself and/or others before it escalates.

At Extra Second Inc. we are here to maximize every second.

Through skills that are easy to learn, apply, and retain: What if we could give you an extra second, one that could save your life or someone in your protective care? What would that be worth?

Proverbs 27:12 reads, “A prudent man foresees evil and hides himself; the simple pass on and are punished.”
